What is RFID tag and reader?

A RFID is abbreviation of Radio Frequency Identification and this technology used to automatically identify and track tag attached to objects using radio waves.

RFID card reader:  HID cards, commonly referred to as prox cards, proximity cards, and access control cards, utilize embedded RFID technology. These cards are read by HID card readers, which are employed in access control systems to unlock doors.

RFID Tag

An RFID tag is a small device that contains:

  • A microchip for storing information (like a unique ID)
  • An antenna for transmitting that information

There are two main types:

  1. Passive RFID tags: No battery; powered by the reader’s signal.
  2. Active RFID tags: Have their own power source (battery) and can transmit signals over longer distances.

RFID Reader

An RFID reader (or scanner) is a device that:

  • Emits radio waves to communicate with RFID tags
  • Receives and decodes the signal transmitted back by the tag
  • Sends the data to a computer or system for processing

How it Works

  • The RFID reader sends out a radio frequency signal
  • The tag in range picks up the signal
  • The tag sends back its stored data (e.g., ID number)
  • The reader captures this data and sends it to a backend system

Common Uses

  • Inventory and asset tracking
  • Access control (e.g., key cards)
  • Contactless payments (e.g., metro cards, credit cards)
  • Animal tracking (e.g., pet microchips)
  • Supply chain management
